Adventures are the best way to learn

Adventures are the best way to learn

A few years ago the phrase –Gap year- was randomly thrown around, but now the phrase –Gap year- seems to be on every young person´s lips. Whenever someone talks about it, it´s met with the idea of traveling to a different country, making memories, spending a wonderful time abroad and vacation feeling. But what are they like in reality?

My name is Ayleen Breuer and currently I´m in 11th grade and I decided to do an exchange year in the schoolyear 2014/15. It was a long road with up´s and down´s full of applications, writing essays and interviews until I was able to finally start my journey.

Before the day my plane left I couldn’t wait to leave and go on this big adventure. At my destination gate looking through the milky window, seeing an unknown family with a big colorful paper waiting for me to arrive, it finally hit me what I was about to do. I have been terrified at the moment. Making a big life change is pretty scary. On the other hand do you know what´s even scarier? Regret. Because in the end, we only regret the chances we didn´t take.

I spent my exchange in America in the State Michigan at the age of 15. Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of the United States. It is the 10th biggest State in the United States of America. The most popular cities in Michigan are Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids. I lived in a small town called Dorr, located about 40 minutes south of Grand Rapids and attend 10th grade in High School for 10 months.

In Michigan I made unforgettable memories. I found a second family and amazing friends. I got the chance to play sports on the High School teams and traveled to different places in Michigan and other states like Indiana, Illinois and California. The list of things I was able to do and experience during my exchange year could go on and on.

America is in many ways different to Germany and things we are used too. During my time abroad I got to know a lot of things my new home is known for and some seemed odd at first. Most American cities and towns are too spread out for walking, and public transport is most of the time not an option recommended. Living in the US without a car is torture. In Europe there is almost always a different language right next door, but in America you shouldn’t expect people to speak in another language then English. Most of the Americans are religious and attend church. American´s are not afraid to show that they are religious in public and during this difficult time of presidential election, you can read almost everywhere “No matter who is president - Jesus is King”. The American High School has 4 grades and different names for each grade: 9th grade “Freshman”, 10th grade “Sophomore”, 11th grade “Junior” and 12th grade “Senior”.

Exchange will be the best year of your life so far and it will also be the worst without a doubt. It´s something no one back home will ever truly understand. You tell someone back at home little things and they will just smile about it but never will they truly understand what those “little things” mean to you. No matter what, you have to treasure those “little things” and special moments for one simple reason. You build a life for 15 years and leave it for 10 months. You build a life for 10 months and leave it for forever.

I know from my experience it´s not going to be all sunshine and daisies at all time but you can get through it and will have a wonderful time and won´t regret anything. And you won´t care anymore about being a year behind everyone else at school and all the times you have been homesick because you have learned to appreciate the things.

This fall vacation I went back to my second home for a 3 week visit. It was a great feeling to come back and I felt home the second I arrived. I got the chance to see a lot of people again. My family and friends in America made my stay one I won´t forget and I made more amazing memories. You can take the girl out of Michigan but you can´t take Michigan out of the girl :-)

Adventsbasar 2016
